About Holly Kendall

Holly is a Sydney-based artist whose nature-inspired, layered abstract works explore connection, memory and inner landscapes. Through textured layers, instinctive colour and bold, expressive marks, Holly’s abstract paintings offer a deeply personal reflection on the stories that shape us.

Her latest body of work, Earth and Salt, Holly investigates the feelings and memories that places leave within us. Her work draws on time spent in nature and the powerful ways that place imprints itself on the senses. Much like the scent of cut grass can transport us to a specific moment in time, her paintings seek to evoke those fleeting experiences of connection and recollection through colour, texture, and layered surfaces.

Holly’s process often begins with hand-painted tissue paper collage, laying down the first impressions in ink. From there, she builds depth through translucent glazes, washes, and veils of acrylic, allowing each layer to carry part of the story. Her work offers an opportunity to pause, feel, and remember.

Alongside her abstract practice, Holly is also known for her intricately detailed paintings of Australian birdlife, particularly black cockatoos, galahs and kookaburras. Collected internationally, these works are celebrated for their fine brushwork, rhythmic patterns and the quiet vitality they bring to interior spaces.

Holly’s art invites viewers into a space of resonance with self, with nature and with the layered stories that connect us all.

Holly aims for her paintings to evoke a sense of connection. “I love the connection I make with collectors of my art. It brings me joy to know that something in the work resonates, that it stirs an emotion or a memory they hold close.”
